Let’s Get PrEP
This project started in December 2020 and ended in November 2021.It was funded through the support of The National Lottery Community Fund. The aim of the project was to increase awareness, knowledge and understanding of HIV prevention, especially methods (tools) like Pre – Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).
PrEP is a highly effective way of preventing HIV through taking a pill on a regular basis. PrEP is now available in sexual health clinics in England. It is free on the NHS for those who need it.
PrEP is a welcome addition to other HIV prevention methods including, the consistent and correct use of condoms, improved access to HIV testing, post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and effective HIV treatment. Yet studies have shown that Black Africans are less likely to use HIV prevention methods like PrEP, due to lack of information, mistrust and disinformation.
During the uncertain environment of COVID 19, Lets Get PrEP project aimed to build the confidence of Black and African communities to use PrEP and other HIV prevention tools, through virtual community conversations, information dissemination by PREP champions, signposting and telephone support.
